International Relations
The International Organization of Legal Metrology is an intergovernmental organization which:
o Develops model regulations, standards and related documents for use by legal metrology authorities and industry.
o Provides mutual recognition systems which reduce trade barriers and costs in a global market.
o Represents the interests of the legal metrology community within international organizations and forums concerned with metrology, standardization, testing, certification and accreditation
o Promotes and facilitates the exchange of knowledge and competencies within the legal metrology community worldwide,
o Cooperates with other metrology bodies to raise awareness of the contribution that a sound legal metrology infrastructure can make to a modern economy.
• Colombia has been a member of the OIML since February 2012. Its participation has given an international recognition of measuring instruments and their results (OIML Certification Systems) made by the SIC, it has help with the standardization procedures supported by the Certification System of the OIML, provides safety and confidence for the consumer in measurements and compliance with technical regulations and finally helps to enhance productivity and international trade for Colombia.
Colombia host for the first time to hold the 52nd Annual Meeting of the OIML in Cartagena. The event gathers member countries from the entire world and it was possible to discuss in depth the activities carried out in the last year and the projections for the following period. This taking into account the work carried out by Latin American countries and their contribution to economic development and the search for consumer well-being and protection.
This event took place in Cartagena and was organized by the Superintendence of Industry and Commerce, with the purpose of highlighting the metrological work of various countries such as Spain, Argentina, Ecuador, Mexico, Costa Rica, China, Germany, Slovakia, Cuba, Brazil, Peru, Canada, the United States, and Colombia.
During the 2nd International Congress of Legal Metrology, the Superintendence of Industry and Commerce was awarded by The International Organization of Legal Metrology-OIML as the leading Institution in the matter, highlighting the contribution that its leadership represents in the economic development for Colombia
